SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) -
Summerville police are looking for suspects after a shooting at an apartment complex in Summerville.
Officers responded to the Planters Retreat apartment complex early Monday morning around 2 a.m. in reference to a shooting. The responding officers didn't hear or see anything in the area but didn't see anyone outside their apartments, according to the incident report.
One shell casing was found on the sidewalk before a canvas of the area discovered several more rounds, the incident report stated. Officers didn't find any points of impact from bullets and didn't find anyone with gunshot wounds in area hospitals, according to the incident report.
A witness who approached officers stated they saw two men walking toward each other when one yelled, "where is my money?" and both men took out handguns and began shooting at each other, according to the incident report.
Gene Gillies heard the gunshots.
"There was a lot of arguing at first. Then all of a sudden my wife woke me up out of my sleep and asked me if I heard that. Then all of a sudden we just heard gunshots. After that about six gunshots that went off," Gillies said.
The witness said they believed both men left and added they heard five to eight shots.
News of the shootout left some residents shaken.
"I come in at that time of morning from work. You know to have someone tell me that they're shooting and I live right here, so my car is here, I could have easily come in the midst of that and gotten hit last night," Janis Washington said. "I'm thinking about leaving because at the end of the day I have children that come in and out. They work and at any point you never know what you're walking into."
Gillies is thankful no innocent people were shot.
"It's a blessing from God that nobody got killed in this," Gillies said.
