NORTH CHARLESTON (WCSC) - North Charleston Police are investigating two suspicious car fires that happened just a few blocks from each other early Saturday morning.

It started Saturday, around 5 a.m., when a car on Fernwood Dr. exploded into flames. It then rolled into a fence just a few feet from the home. The boom could be heard by neighbors several blocks away.

Less than an hour later, a truck on Edbillellis Rd. was gutted by fire.

Both families are still in shock but said one thing is for sure, they don't think these fires are a coincidence.

"They could have killed us, we were in the bed," said George Fournier, resident who lost his truck in the suspicious fire. "It's just scary to think about."

Fournier and his wife have lived on Edbillellis Road for the last 25 years. He said it was a quiet street, but that changed Saturday. Just after 5 a.m. he woke up to a horn going off. He said went outside to see his Ford truck on fire, just feet from his home.

"I was petrified, I couldn't move," said Fournier.

Fournier said he bought the truck, brand new, 18 years ago.

"My heart broke, that's my baby," said Fournier. "I'm 72 years old and that's all I had, there won't be another one of them."

Less than an hour before the Fournier's truck caught fire, another family, just a few blocks away, also watched their car go up in flames.

"It was the scariest thing I've ever seen in my life," said Adrienne Lee, resident who watched her car go up in flames.

Lee said she was asleep inside her home on Fernwood Drive with her two children, boyfriend and roommate when an explosion woke them from their sleep. Lee said she found her 1992 Camry on fire in the driveway and then, on the move.

"The car started rolling and it rolled into the side of the house," said Lee.

Her home also caught fire, but firefighters arrived in minutes and were able to extinguish the blaze.

"Otherwise, I would have lost my kitchen probably," said Lee.

Lee and Fournier both said they have no idea why their vehicles were targeted.

"It was horrible but it makes me feel a little bit better that maybe we weren't specifically targeted," said Lee.

Both families are grateful to be alive, but don't feel safe

"It's hard to believe that this kind of stuff happens, my yard looks like a war zone," said Lee.

"You don't know if you want to go out to the mailbox anymore," said Fourier.

Lee said her children are scared to go to sleep at night and they are considering moving.

Lee and Fournier both had some forms of car insurance but they're not sure how much of the damage is going to be covered. Both their vehicles were deemed a total loss. Lee has created a GoFundMe account to raise money for both of the families so they can get back on their feet.

No suspects have been identified and both cases remain under investigation.
