NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A man who threatened to "shoot police" was wounded after pointing a gun at North Charleston police Wednesday afternoon, according to North Charleston police spokesman Spencer Pryor.
North Charleston police responded to a report of shots fired at the 4200 block of Meeting Street Road where they learned a man had taken a female into an office and locked the door, Pryor said. Police say they were told the man had threatened to "shoot police if they show up."
Officers arrived on the scene and set up a perimeter around the location, and moments later, the suspect exited the business and pointed a handgun at officers, police say. An officer fired one round, striking the suspect, 28-year-old Kenneth Lamont Brown, in the upper right arm, Pryor said.
Brown was detained and transported to MUSC.
Brown is charged with kidnapping, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and pointing and presenting a firearm, according to a police statement.
The female victim was found frightened but unharmed inside the office.
Following standard protocol whenever an officer is involved in a shooting incident, the State Law Enforcement Division was called in to investigate, Pryor said.
The officer involved in the shooting is "OK," according to SLED spokesman Thom Berry.
