CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - North Charleston police are investigating after a vehicle was struck twice with gunfire while traveling on I-26 early Thursday morning.

Police say the shooting took place around 3:10 a.m. on I-26 westbound approximately one mile from the Ashley Phosphate exit.

The victim told police he was driving his white Hyundai Sonata down the interstate when he noticed a grey car coming up on his left side at a fast rate of speed. Once beside the victim, the driver of the grey car fired roughly 6 to 7 gunshots out the front passenger window and sped off.

Police say they found one bullet hole in the front driver side door and one on the door just in front of the driver's side mirror.

An incident report states the victim told police he previously went to Bay Side Apartments in downtown Charleston to visit a woman, and then drove to Russeldale to attempt to find someone selling marijuana. After not being able to find a drug dealer, the victim got on the interstate to drive home.

The victim said he did not notice anyone following him and did not know of anyone who would want to harm him.

The incident is under investigation.
