CHARLESTON, SC (WCBD) - Charleston County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a home invasion that turned deadly early Saturday morning. Deputies responded to Greenland Road in West Ashley shortly after 2:30 AM.

A male victim told deputies that three men with guns kicked in the back door of the residence and assaulted him and a female victim, 27-year-old Donnetta Heyward of Charleston. While one of the suspects struck the male victim in the head, Heyward was taken outside by the other two suspects.

Deputies said the suspects asked the victims, "Where is the money?"

The male victim says that he then heard two to three gunshots outside the home. Then the suspects fled the scene.

Heyward was transported to MUSC where she was later pronounced dead. An autopsy will be performed by the Charleston County Coroner's Office to determine the cause of death. The male victim was transported to St. Francis Hospital where he was treated for head injuries and released.

Suspect one is described as a black male, 5'09 – 5'10", about 170 lbs. Suspect two is described as a black male, 6'0", about 210 lbs. And suspect three is describe as a light skinned black male, 6'01, medium build, about 185 lbs.

Deputies tell News 2, "It is obvious to us, that they were there for a reason."

Prior to this incident a late model green, four door Honda was seen in the area and was also seen leaving the area shortly after the gunshots were heard.

Deputies said there is no immediate evidence to suggest this incident is connected to the recent shootings that have occurred in North Charleston. Anyone with information about this incident is ask to call the Sheriff’s Office at (843) 202-1700 or Crime Stoppers at (843) 554-1111.
