COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A 14-year-old girl is in serious condition in an area hospital after being shot with a gang member's gun Sunday night in what police are calling an "unintentional shooting."
A Columbia Police Department spokesperson says a 16-year-old has been arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a pistol in connection with the shooting. Investigators say the juvenile is a "validated" gang member.
The teen victim was found by police in the parking lot of Latimer Manor Apartments on Lorick Circle around 9 p.m. According to police, she was shot in the upper body.
Officers responded to the area after somebody called 911 to report gunfire.
Police suspect the teen of acting in a reckless manor by brandishing the weapon before the shooting.
The victim was transported to an area hospital in critical but stable condition. She was upgraded to serious condition on Monday. Authorities say she may be paralyzed.
Police said Monday afternoon the shooting was not intentional.
