CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston Police Department says a man who was found shot in downtown Tuesday afternoon has died of his injuries.
Investigators say the victim was found in a dugout at a baseball field on America Street.
Anetria Evans, who was babysitting a friend's kids at a nearby home, says she heard the gunshots and rushed to the victim's side to attempt to give aid.
"I ran over there and told someone to call 911," Evans said. "When I arrived over there, I said,'Hang on man, hang on.'"
Evans said she checked for a pulse, which she said was weak, stayed with the victim until help could arrive and prayed. Evans says the victim was shot in the head and appeared to be in his teens.
"I feel really bad because it's like today, kids seem not to have the value of life," said Evans who said she could relate to the incident since her nephew had been killed some time ago."I wish I could've done more, but it wasn't in my hands."
According to Evans, many kids play in the area and could've been struck by the bullet.
"This kind of stuff gotta stop because there are too many kids be out here playing football, and it's real bad."
Authorities say a person of interest in the shooting was taken into custody following a traffic stop. The victim has not been identified.
