NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A 55-year-old man has been charged with murder after the man he allegedly shot over the weekend during an argument about a tossed beer died early Monday at the hospital.

North Charleston police say Vaughn Louis Hilliard shot a 46-year-old Troy Cason outside 1805 Grayson Street around 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Officers said they responded to the Medical University of South Carolina on Saturday evening to try and speak with Cason, but he was in the operating room.

Cason later died at MUSC from a gunshot wound to the stomach.

"My daddy is a good person, he doesn't bother anybody," said Sabrina Poinsette, Cason's daughter."We had our faith and our hope that he was going to make it. We didn't know he was going to pass away."

Police spoke with the Cason's girlfriend, who said she witnessed the shooting. The witness said she and Cason drove to a home on Grayson Street "so that the victim could introduce her to some friends." The witness said they arrived and met a man and a woman sitting outside an apartment building.

While they were speaking, the witness said the man threw a beer on the ground. At that time, the witness said Hilliard came around the corner of a trailer and started arguing with Cason because he thought the victim threw the beer.

The witness said Cason then pushed the suspect, Hilliard, to the ground. At that time, the witness said Hilliard went back inside the trailer and returned with a "long brown rifle with a scope on it." The witness said she and Cason tried to leave, but Hilliard fired a shot which struck the left side of her boyfriend's torso.

She said she was able to get Cason into a car before he lost consciousness. She took him to Roper Hospital but he was immediately transferred to MUSC, due to the severity of his injuries.

Hilliard, of 1805 Grayson Street, was taken into custody on Sunday afternoon and charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. His charges were upgraded to murder on Monday after the victim died.

Hilliard, denied bond, is being held in the Charleston County Detention Center.
