JOHNS ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Authorities say three people were found dead in a submerged vehicle in Penny Creek, off the Stono River near the St. Johns Yacht Harbor.
Charleston Police Department officers said they responded to the scene around 7:30 a.m. after receiving reports of a vehicle in the creek. They arrived to find a SUV partially submerged with fatalities inside, police said. Charleston County Rescue Squad officials said three bodies were found.
The SUV has been pulled from the water and dive teams will continue to search the area. The stretch of Maybank Highway near the area will remain closed for awhile.
St. Johns firefighters, EMS officials, two chaplains, and the Charleston County Coroner's Office also responded to the scene.
