CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston Police Department has arrested a suspected drug dealer who police say was captured after the moped he was trying to use to escape stalled out in downtown Charleston.

Authorities charged 21-year-old Matthew Lavard Campbell with possession with intent to distribute cocaine base.

On Wednesday night, officers on patrol in the area of Stuart and America streets saw Campbell driving a moped with no tail light.

Police say when officers approached the moped, Campbell would not stop and attempted to flee the scene, but could not since his moped began to stall out.

Once the moped stopped, one of the officers said he grabbed Campbell's left arm and had him get off the moped.

During a search of Campbell, an officer felt a bulge in Campbell's left sock and asked him what it was.

Campbell told the officer it was crack. An incident report states the officer located 1.7 grams of cocaine base worth $130 in Campbell's sock.

The suspect was taken to the Charleston County Detention Center. He was issued a $20,000 bond on Thursday.
