Thieves damage 100 storage rental units in Berkeley County

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Berkeley County sheriff's deputies are trying to determine if a series of break-ins at storage rental facilities are related.

Moncks Corner Self Storage, Strawberry Self Storage, Stars and Stripes Storage and at least one other business have been targeted in the past few weeks, according to deputies.

Investigators say about 100 total storage units were damaged by the burglars.

Two suspects were seen on surveillance video taken at Moncks Corner Self Storage.

On July 5, a customer called manager Dee Powers and said his unit and several others were open. The customer asked Powers if the business was having an auction.

That's when she knew something was wrong.

"Come to find out after doing inventory, there were 34 units that have been broken into," Powers said.

Powers says the burglars cut three holes in the front gate, stole some jewelry from one storage unit and a bicycle from another.

But the suspects made a big mistake, by coming close to the surveillance cameras.

"At one point, he glances up like he sees a camera, but it doesn't faze him. He goes right on doing his business," said Berkeley County Sheriff's spokesman Dan Moon.

That makes Dee Powers angry, who says her customers expect security and privacy.

"And they're apparently not getting it because some hoodlum wants to come out and do something they're not supposed to be doing, and taking other people's property."

Anyone with information on the break-ins should call Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
