CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Police say robbery was the motive in an early-morning shooting that left a Ladson man dead.

Charleston Police have since issued warrants for two suspects wanted for gunning down 24-year-old Jarvon Dowling outside the Bridgeview Village Apartments in downtown Charleston early Monday.

Charleston Police Department Spokesman Charles Francis said 21-year-old Javon Brown is wanted for murder and 21-year-old Samuel Smiley, currently on probation for a weapons charge, is wanted for accessory before the fact to murder.

Brown is also charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

Police say Brown shot Dowling around 1:40 a.m. outside 129 North Romney Street after a brief encounter. Dowling, who was recently arrested in a warrants sweep of the Ladson subdivision Woodside Manor, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Charleston police initiated an operation at the apartments after receiving information that one of the suspects was hiding in one of the units.

Police only allowed residents to enter and leave the apartment complex, but no one was allowed in the area where the operation took place. Police also evacuated several apartments near the apartment where the suspect was allegedly hiding, and also used tear gas at one point, to no avail.

All residents were allowed to return to their apartments, Francis added.

Anyone with information about them can call Charleston police at 577-7434 or Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
