CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Police are investigating after a man was shot dead off the Crosstown early Sunday morning.
According to the Charleston County Coroner's Office, 22-year-old William Nelson was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.
Charleston Police Department spokesman Charles Francis said the shooting happened at the Septima Clark Expressway's intersection with Line Street around 12:41 a.m.
After receiving reports of shots fired, officers arrived on scene to find the male victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.
Two separate neighbors told Live 5 News they heard five shots just outside their homes.
"It's always surprising and alarming to see your neighborhood and your house lit up by blue lights and flares late at night," said Nicolas Browning, who returned to his house on Rutledge Avenue just after 2 a.m. Sunday. "It's always scary."
Detectives say they are canvassing the area and are trying to gather information about the incident and possible suspect.
