CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Across two blocks of downtown Charleston's eastside, three Charleston City police cameras sit high above the street. The cameras are scanning the block, watching 24 hours a day. But 12 hours after a man was shot and killed on Hanover street, and no one has been arrested, the community is calling for more birds-eye protection.
"I think they should install more cameras," said Tommy Wright. "It would be better... safer for the community. People will rest better."
Wright works along America Street, one block away from the deadly shooting Thursday. He says the neighborhood has been a hotbed for drugs and crime for years.
Another woman who only wanted to be identified as Mary Ann can list off the kids she says have been killed in the area.
"The bible said thou shalt not kill," she said. "So whoever's doing this killing doesn't know about the bible."
During warm days and nights, Mary Ann sits outside with a camera a half a block away pointing in her direction. She calls it her safety net.
"We really need it out here for real," she said. "It's really needed."
The Charleston County Coroner's office identified the Hanover shooting victim as 23-year-old man Maliek Byers, who died on scene from multiple gunshot wounds.
The Charleston Police Department says the shooting happened around 3 a.m. near the intersection of Hanover and Reid streets.
Police said they found the victim collapsed on a apartment stairwell, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
