ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - The Orangeburg Sheriff's Office discovered an illegal liquor distillery Friday in Orangeburg County.
Sheriff Leroy Ravenell says deputies were searching for a murder suspect and located the liquor distillery in a wooded area of Jaques land.
"Over 30 barrels of mash, 9 cookers, a water pump, 5 propane tanks used for the cooking process and over 45 gallons of illegal liquor was seized from the property," said Sheriff Ravenell.
Investigators say the estimated street value of the finished product found was $2,000. The distillery was capable of manufacturing over $10,000 worth of illegal liquor at one time.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol, State Law Enforcement Division and the Department of Natural Resources all assisted the Orangeburg Sheriff's Office in the investigation and the destruction of the distillery.
