WALTERBORO, SC (WCSC) - Walterboro police are looking for a flimflammer they say swindled an 82-year-old woman out of $12,200 in cash on Thursday afternoon.

According to the Walterboro Police Department incident report, a black woman dressed in a flowery black, white, and red dress with a straw hat approached the elderly woman outside of the Bi-Lo grocery store on Robertson Boulevard and told her that she had just found a bag containing $68,000.

The report states that the stranger asked the woman if she wanted to split the money, saying that she was planning to take the cash over to the Dollar General and meet with an attorney to figure out what to do with it.

The victim told police that after the alleged swindler walked inside the store, she returned outside and said that they would split the money but she wouldn't be able to spend it for 6 months so she needed to make sure that she had money in the bank, according to the report.

Police said that the victim gave the hat-wearing woman the $5,000 that she was carrying and then she gave her another $7200 in cash after going to her bank.

Finally the victim and the woman ended up in the Belk parking lot. Police say the swindler told the woman that she could go inside the store to the customer service desk, where a man would give her $20,000.

The report states that when the elderly woman came inside, she discovered that there was no man with $20,000 in cash for her. When she returned to the parking lot, the woman was gone.

This investigation is ongoing. If you have any information, call police at (843) 549-1811.
