NORTH CHARLESTON, SC - Shots rang out right near a North Charleston Elementary school. Police say emergency crews took a man to MUSC in critical condition where he later died.

North Charleston Police say the shooting happened at the corner of Success Street and Chicora Avenue.

"There was some type of altercation between two black males. One pulled out a weapon," police spokesman Spencer Pryor said.

Police have identified the murder suspect as 26-year-old Joshua Hamilton of North Charleston. They do not have a motive for the killing, but say both men apparently knew each other.

Police say right after the victim was shot several times, he ran about a block down the road toward Spruill Avenue, and then collapsed. Nearby Chicora Elementary School was placed on lockdown.

Hank Finkling heard about the shooting on Live 5 News at noon. He came to make sure his six-year-old step-grandson, who he picks up from school every day, was safe.

"A bullet can go anywhere. It's really scary. I don't think they should, anybody should have a handgun except a policeman. They're no good," Finkling said.

"The school was placed immediately on lockdown once we arrived, so we could secure the perimeter, but once the perimeter was secure and we felt that it was safe the lockdown was lifted," Pryor said.

Police say anytime something like this happens near a school a lockdown is customary to make sure everyone is safe. It was lifted within an hour, and police say parents shouldn't be worried about sending their students back to Chicora Elementary School tomorrow.

The victim was identified by the coroner as 27-year-old Anthony Gary.

Police say they are following leads on a suspect. If you know anything about this murder you should call Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
