MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - Charleston police say officials are searching the Cooper River after a man jumped from the Ravenel Bridge following an attempted traffic stop Monday morning.
Police say two northbound lanes on the Ravenel Bridge going towards Mt. Pleasant have been shut down while authorities respond to the scene. The pedestrian walkway was also closed, but has since been reopened.
According to Charleston police, officers initiated a traffic stop on East Bay Street around 5:30 a.m. The traffic stop was called off after the driver refused to stop, and drove on to the Ravenel Bridge.
Once on the bridge, police say the driver slowed down and jumped from his vehicle, climbed onto the pedestrian walkway, and then jumped off the bridge into the river.
Charleston Police Harbor Patrol, North Charleston Police Harbor Patrol, Mt. Pleasant Harbor Patrol, and Charleston County Rescue are searching the River for the motorist.
Coast Guard officials say they are also assisting in the incident.
