HANAHAN, SC (WCSC) - Officials with the Hanahan Police Department say a Stratford High School teacher and coach has been arrested following allegations of assault.

Authorities arrested 44-year-old Steven Douglas Jones of Hanahan.

Douglas' arrest stems from an incident on Tuesday night at the Dorchester County Police Annex where a Hanahan police officer responded to speak with deputies concerning a "severe" domestic case.

Police say a woman was being held in custody for a possible shoplifting. When deputies responded to that incident, authorities say the woman was not trying to steal products, but was screaming profanity at the deputies.

The Hanahan police officer was told that staff at the Dorchester County police annex discovered that the woman had severe first-degree burns and bruising on her back. A police report states that along with the injuries, the woman had about 10 pain patches over her injuries.

Dorchester County deputies reported that before the woman was taken to jail, she needed to be transported to Summerville Medical Center to get clearance to make sure she was okay.

According to the police report, the woman said that the bruising on her body was from Jones, who she identified as her boyfriend.

Berkeley County School District holds our employees to the highest level of professional excellence.

As soon as the district learned of the charge and alleged incidents and in compliance with District policy, the employee was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
