CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston Police Department is alerting residents of a telephone scam that is targeting the elderly.
Charleston investigators say they received two complaints on Tuesday and Wednesday where an elderly victim is called by someone claiming to be their grandson.
The subject calls and says he's been in an accident, needs bail money and that a public defender will be calling.
Authorities say another subject then calls and requests a certain amount of money to be wired to him.
Police say in Tuesday's incident, the victim sent the money.
In Wednesday's incident, the victim initially told the subject he didn't have the money. A police report states the subject then lowered the bail amount three times. Investigators say the victim ultimately checked on his real grandson and found him safe at home.
Authorities say anyone who receives a suspicious call similar to these incidents should call their local police agency.
