WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - Police say a 22-year-old man wanted on multiple warrants used a rental car and went barefoot in the woods in order to escape police officers in West Ashley.

The Charleston Police Department charged Richard DeWayne Butler with failure to stop for blue light and driving under suspension.

On Sunday night, a Charleston police officer was in the area of Savannah Highway when he spotted a sedan with heavy dark tinted windows, and conducted a traffic stop near Melrose Drive.

The officer said as he stepped out of his police cruiser, the suspect's vehicle took off at a high rate of speed.

Authorities say during a pursuit, the suspect traveled into the wrong lane of traffic on Savage Road and ran a stop sign. At one point the officer lost visual contact with the suspect's car, but was able to find the vehicle in the grass on Marginal Road.

Officers say it appeared the suspect lost control of the vehicle. Authorities said they also found two black sandals in the middle of the road. A short time later, an officer said he heard what he believed to be someone walking through some nearby woods.

Police say they found Butler attempting to hide himself on the ground between brush and a ditch. A police report states Butler was sweating profusely, and his shirt was covered in dirt and grass. Authorities say Butler did not have any shoes on as well.

An officer said when he asked Butler who was the owner of the vehicle, Butler replied, "It's a rental."

A police report states because Butler knew who the vehicle belonged to without knowing what vehicle the officer was talking about, the state of the suspect's socks and the sandals found in the roadway, authorities concluded that Butler was the occupant of the vehicle that took off during the traffic stop on Savannah Highway.

A DMV check revealed that Butler's license was suspended. Additionally, investigators say they discovered that Butler was wanted by the North Charleston Police Department and the Charleston County Sheriff's Office for two outstanding warrants.
