LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC - Lexington County Sheriff’s Department detectives arrested a 31-year-old West Columbia man on charges that the man stole two all-terrain vehicles, one golf cart, one fishing boat, one chainsaw, one video camera, farm equipment and scrap metal worth a combined total of about $25,600 during a property crime spree that occurred between May 21 and September 5.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said detectives on Friday, September 20 obtained arrest warrants for Gene Carroll “Fuzzy” Rutland, Jr., 31, of 117 Minolta Drive, West Columbia, on six counts of grand larceny. Rutland was being held on Friday at the Lexington County Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing.

Detectives also arrested Rutland’s live-in girlfriend, Rachel Ann Hobson, 35, on charges of accessory after the fact to a felony and obstruction of justice, Metts said. Hobson was being held on Friday at the county Detention Center on bail totaling $10,000.

An arrest warrant alleges that on May 21 Rutland stole one Yamaha Big Bear all-terrain vehicle, one EZ Go golf cart and one Stihl chainsaw worth a combined total of about $2,600 from Ballbusters Paintball, Inc. at 227 Super Drive, West Columbia, Metts said.

In addition, an arrest warrant alleges that on August 4 Rutland stole computer power cords and one video camera worth about $2,000 from a home on Wilbur Road near Gaston, Metts said.

An arrest warrant further alleges that between August 10 and August 22 Rutland on two occasions stole one large saw mill blade, farm equipment and scrap metal worth a combined total of about $10,000 from a property on Busbee Road near Gaston, Metts said.

An arrest warrant also alleges that on August 28 Rutland stole a 2013 CF Moto X500 all-terrain vehicle worth about $5,000 from a home on Savannah Highway near Swansea, Metts said. Rutland hotwired the vehicle and drove the vehicle away from the home.

An arrest warrant further alleges that on September 12 Hobson aided Rutland in the commission of a felony by going to a business that sells all-terrain vehicles and trying to buy replacement parts for the 2013 CF Moto X500 all-terrain vehicle that Rutland stole on August 28 from the Savannah Highway home, Metts said. The replacement parts that Hobson tried to buy commonly are used to repair the ignition system for an all-terrain vehicle.

In addition, an arrest warrant alleges that Rutland on September 5 stole a brown 17-foot Laser bass boat, with a 150-horsepower Mariner outboard motor, worth about $6,000 from a home on Burton Road near Lexington, Metts said.

Metts said the case involving Rutland remains under investigation. The sheriff said detectives might file additional charges against Rutland.
