HANAHAN, SC (WCSC) - The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating after a suspect was killed late Monday during a foot chase that followed a traffic stop in Hanahan.
According to Lieutenant Michael Fowler with Hanahan Police Department, just before midnight, a Hanahan police officer attempted to stop a motorist for a traffic violation, but the driver didn't pull over. The driver lead police onto Remount Road, before finally stopping on Dakota Street.
Lt. Fowler said an officer ordered the people inside the car step out of the vehicle, and one of the suspects took off running.
Fowler said shots were then fired a short time later. He did not specify who fired shots, and ceded all other questions to SLED.
SLED spokesman Thom Berry said one suspect involved in the incident died. Berry could not confirm if the officer shot the suspect, or if the officer even fired shots.
Live 5 Photographer Neal Folger found two active scenes in the area: one near the corner of Remount Road and Dakota, and the other at Robertson Boulevard and Bramble Avenue, which is just around the corner.
Several Hanahan police officers were on the scene along with members of the North Charleston Police Department, Berkeley County Sheriff's Office and the Charleston County Sheriff's Office SWAT Team.
The Charleston County Coroner's Office has not identified the victim.
