NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Authorities say a man suspected of breaking into cars was captured after his friend told a police officer that he was on his way to get a cigarette from the wanted man.
The North Charleston Police Department arrested 31-year-old Kenneth Vandrell Scott who was wanted for two breaking and entering incidents that happened in May and July.
On Sunday, an officer patrolling an apartment complex on Fairwind Drive saw a man cutting through apartments. The man told the officer that he was on his way to get a cigarette "from a guy named Tre" at the Greentree North Apartments at Otranto Road.
The officer said he immediately thought of a wanted subject, Kenneth Vandrell Scott, who goes by the name of Tre. When the officer showed a picture of Scott, the man told the officer that was the man he was going to get a cigarette from.
Officers then found Scott at one of the units at the Greentree North Apartments.
In one of the incidents Scott is accused of, police say his victim caught the suspect rummaging through her car outside a home on Red Oak Drive on May 20. Police say at least five other cars in the area had been broken into that day.
"I was like somebody's in the car...I was like somebody was in the car and I'm looking dead at him just pulling stuff out of the car," recalled Gina Williams.
Investigators also charged Scott in connection to a theft from a car on July 22. In that incident, a handgun was stolen from the vehicle.
