WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - Authorities say a 42-year-old man who was caught speeding through a hotel on a moped, crashed in a parking lot as police officers ran after him.
The Charleston Police Department charged Larry Smith with failure to stop for blue light.
On Wednesday night, two police officers say they saw a man on a moped speeding through the sidewalks and corridors of the InTown Suites on 2236 Savannah Hwy.
Officers say when they activated their blue lights on their patrol vehicle, Smith raced through the sidewalks of the hotel and into the parking lot while ignoring the officers' commands to stop.
Authorities say as they ran after Smith, Smith lost control of the moped and crashed. According to police, Smith then took off running on Savannah Highway.
A police report states an officer eventually caught Smith at the rear of the Charleston Family Dentistry.
Smith told officers,"I thought I had a child support warrant, that's why I ran from y'all."
Smith was transported to St. Francis for an injury to his leg. He was then released from the hospital and locked up at the Charleston County Detention Center.
