GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - The Georgetown County Sheriff's Office says they have arrested the man who shot his friend in the behind after drinking together all day Saturday.
Georgetown County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Carrie Cuthbertson said 53-year-old James "Peanut" Dewey Mercer was taken into custody around 1 a.m. near Georgetown Highway and Kent Road.
Deputies say Mercer called 911 just before 8 p.m. Saturday and said, "I just shot my friend." By the time authorities arrived at 155 Dutch Court, Mercer had already run off, deputies said.
Meanwhile, the victim was taken by a friend to another location where EMS arrived and transported him to the Georgetown Hospital for treatment, deputies said.
According to the victim, he and Mercer had been drinking alcohol together all day and started arguing shortly after 7 p.m. When the victim decided to leave to walk to his own house, he said Mercer went back inside 155 Dutch Court and grabbed a rifle.
The victim told deputies Mercer then shot him in the buttocks.
Mercer was taken to the Georgetown County Detention Center where he awaits a bond hearing for a charge of attempted murder.
