ST. HELENA ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Officials with the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office say they have arrested a second man in connection to a gun battle between a homeowner and armed robbers at a house in St. Helena.
Deputies arrested 22-year-old Byron Rasheem Moultrie Tuesday evening at a home on Hogarth Street in Beaufort. Moultrie was wanted on charges of attempted murder, armed robbery, discharging a firearm in a dwelling and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
The sheriff's office says Moultrie's accomplice, 18-year-old A-Tray Holmes, was arrested shortly after being treated for a gunshot wound during a thwarted robbery attempt at a 27-year-old man's home on Reunion Road last week.
According to investigators, Moultrie and Holmes went to the victim's home just before 10 p.m. on Friday with the intention of robbing him.The victim told deputies that two suspects entered his home through an unlocked side door.
Authorities say once the suspects were inside the home, Moultrie took out a gun and started shooting at the victim. The victim said he then took out a gun, returned fire and chased the suspects out of his house. An incident report states that deputies believe Holmes was shot as he fled from the home.
Investigators say Holmes admitted to intending to rob the victim. Additional charges and arrests may be pending as the investigation continues.
