ST. MAARTEN (WCSC) - Authorities say a 28-year-old man confessed to being involved in the murders of the Mt. Pleasant couple found dead in their St. Maarten condominium last month.
According to Solicitor Taco Stein, Jamaican native Meyshane Johnson confessed his involvement in the murders of Mike and Thelma King, who were found fatally stabbed on Sept. 22 in their condominium at the Ocean Club Resort on St. Maarten, a 16-square-mile territory with about 50,000 inhabitants that shares a small island with the French dependency of St. Maarten.
Stein said Johnson also confessed to taking part in an armed robbery at the Happy Star restaurant on Sept. 26.
Johnson worked for a security company on the island. Last week, Stein said robbery was the motive for the crime.
On Monday, Stein announced the arrest of 17-year-old suspect in connection with the murders. Stein said the suspect, identified by the St. Maarten News Network as Jeremiah Mills, was captured after an intensive search.
The St. Maarten News Network has also reported Mills and Johnson are cousins.
Authorities say they managed to track the 17-year-old down and arrest him in the Cole Bay area. According to prosecutors, the teen was considered a suspect since last week.
Authorities say more arrests "cannot be excluded."
The Kings had a number of residences, but friends say they spent most of their time recently in Mt. Pleasant, where they kept a home. They frequented the Water's Edge restaurant on Shem Creek.
The couple will be laid to rest in Chapin on Wednesday afternoon.
