HANAHAN, SC (WCSC) - Investigators say three people killed a 71-year-old man to get money to buy crack cocaine.

Hanahan police have charged 39-year-old Robert Randolph Clark, 24-year-old Brittany Lynn Swanger and 24-year-old Robert Andrew McFadden with Roy Bennett's murder.

Officers say Clark did not make an appearance at bond court this morning where all three were denied bond. The presiding judge said that because murder is a no bond crime, Clark's appearance was not necessary.

McFadden and Clark were being held in Berkeley County on unrelated charges. Officials say Clark has previously spent time in prison, serving time in Wyoming, California and South Carolina. He has also been affiliated with a gang.

McFaddden's father, Robert, said his son was brought up in a good home, but just made some bad choices.

Police Chief Michael Cochran says Swanger confessed to the murder and was arrested Thursday night. Lt. Michael Fowler says the motive in Bennett's murder was apparently for money.

"Hey, let's go get some money and that's how this happened," said Cochran.

Fowler said that Bennett was giving money to another female before the murder occurred and police believe that's how the suspects knew he had money. Investigators say Bennett met the suspects through a mutual friend and was killed for money to buy crack cocaine.

Bennett was found dead in his Lombardi Lane home in an 'unnatural manner' around 1 p.m. Sunday. Authorities say Bennett had been duct taped and had a plastic bag over his head.

On Tuesday, a Goose Creek police officer found Bennett's truck parked at the Walmart on Goose Creek. Hanahan Police says Clark and McFadden were seen on surveillance video shoplifting duct tape from a Walmart at around 7:30 p.m. Sunday morning.

According to police officials, video shows a man dropping off Bennett's truck at the department store's parking lot around 4:25 p.m. on Sunday. Police say the man is then seen on video walking towards Murphy's gas station.

Cochran said that surveillance video from Walmart and from a gas station helped their case.

You can solve it with legwork, but really good video just makes that legwork a whole lot easier," he said.
