NORTH CHARLESTON, SC - A man who expressed concerns about loitering near the barber shop where he worked ended up behind bars on Monday night after he was caught carrying a stolen handgun, police say.

According to a North Charleston Police Department incident report, an officer was patrolling Dobson Street in the Charleston Farms neighborhood around 8 p.m. when he saw a man walking on the wrong side of the road.

When the officer made contact with the man, 39-year-old Kindreth Kirkland, to discuss "proper pedestrian practices," Kirkland told him he was a barber at a shop located at Sumner Street near Attaway Street and that they were having problems with loitering in the area, the report states.

The police officer told Kirkland they were working on the loitering problem, then mentioned a recent shooting in the Greenbay area near Kirkland's barber shop, and the suspect became very nervous and kept touching the area over his right pocket, according to the report.

Nervous behavior tipped off the officer, and during a frisking, Kirkland admitted that he was carrying a gun in his waistband. Officers secured a loaded .38 caliber Smith & Wesson pistol, which police said had an obliterated serial number.

A records check on the gun revealed it was reported stolen in North Charleston. Police said they also found a knife in Kirkland's pocket.

He was charged with unlawful carry of a handgun and possession of a stolen pistol. Kirkland was taken to the Charleston County Detention Center.
