CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Crews resumed searching for the body of Gayle McCaffrey in a new area off Highway 61 on Thursday, one day after the case was declared a homicide investigation by Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon.
The search is in the area of North Lander Lane, located near the corner of Highway 61 and Bees Ferry Road, Cannon said during a press conference Wednesday. Information on the cell phones of Gayle and Robert McCaffrey around the time of her disappearance led investigators to the area, Cannon said.
150 searchers are on scene, including 60 Citadel cadets.
The 36-year-old woman was reported missing by her husband, Robert McCaffrey, on Mar. 18, but investigators say he is the suspect in the investigation.
Investigators say Robert McCaffrey told them he drove to Greenville County after he and Gayle had an argument on the night of Mar. 17. When he returned to their Limestone Boulevard home the next morning, he said his wife was gone, and had left behind a typed note.
Cannon says the note is bogus," "The contents of [that note] and what we're learning about both Bob McCaffrey and Gayle McCaffrey lead us to believe that the information in that note is bogus," Cannon said.
Cannon said Robert McCaffrey went to meet a love interest in Greenville County that night, but the meeting didn't go as planned. He added that the love interest was cooperating with authorities.
The sheriff also said that all the evidence at this point is circumstantial
"I think there is a tremendous amount of information and evidence pointing to him," Cannon said. "But at this point, it's circumstantial."
