JOHNS ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Justice for Justin. That was the theme of a BBQ held on Johns Island by Justin Brown's family and friends, Sunday. Brown was murdered ten years ago to the day and still no one has been arrested for the crime. His mother wants justice but it's getting harder. Her son's murder investigation is being filed as a cold case.
"We loved him then. And we still feel that love. And one day we shall meet. In our heaven above," read Justin Brown's grandmother on the front steps of her step-daughter's home on Johns Island.
The poem was written for the celebration of her grandson's life. Sunday, April 29, was the 10th anniversary of Justin Brown's death. Family and friends came together to remember the 19-year-old and to remain strong with the conviction his killer will be found.
"Everything I do I think about him," said his mother Candice Brown. "We did so much together. We were best friends."
It was here in Brown's backyard where her son spent his childhood. Now, in the shade of a large oak tree, the family tells stories.
A memory of Justin helping a single mother pay for groceries, brought smiles.
Another about his love and talent to play the guitar, brought tears.
But the story about his murder at 19-years-old at his apartment in Orlando, Florida and the most recent news the investigation is being filed as a cold case without an arrest, brings confusion.
"At first the detectives told me this is a pretty open and shut case," said Brown. "We have names, we know who did it. We know who was calling his apartment minutes before. We have some evidence, some things left behind. We've got an eye witness. This should be an open an shut case so I didn't think anything of it.
"And here we are 10 years later, which I never thought was going to happen," she said.
Brown, along with those closest to her and her only son, want answers.
"I want them to actively trying to solve this case and look for the people that killed my son," said Brown. "They need to be punished.
"They said all they need is a tip from anybody and they're willing to re-open the case and take it out of cold case."
But Brown says until that day, she will be comforted by the breeze. She knows her son isn't here with her but instead all around her.
"He's telling us he's here with us," she says, blowing bubbles into the wind.
