WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - Police arrested a downtown man on Tuesday for an armed robbery in which he was shot by one of the victims and is now bound to a wheelchair because of the shooting.

The Charleston Police Department charged 20-year-old Maurice Gentile with assault and battery first degree and three counts of attempted armed robbery. Investigators say the attempted armed robbery happened on Sept. 14, 2011 on Rice Drive in West Ashley.

The incident happened around 9:40 p.m. when a dark colored SUV pulled up next to the three victims. Police say two armed men came out of the SUV, demanded money and threatened to shoot the victims.

An incident report states that the victims then ran and ducked behind a vehicle. Police say when Gentile fired a shot at the three, one of the victims returned fire and struck Gentile in the head.

Authorities say the victim who shot Gentile had a concealed weapon permit in his possession. Gentile was released on a personal recognizance bond.

Police are continuing the investigation.
