COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - For the third time in three weeks, Columbia Police are investigating a theft of dogs from the City animal shelter.
Columbia Police say the most recent break-in occurred just before 9 p.m. Saturday, despite increased patrols after dogs were stolen from the animal shelter six days before.
Five pit bulls were stolen from their cages Saturday night.
Surveillance cameras at the animal shelter captured several images of the incident. The suspect was wearing a mask that covered his face and head.
The first incident occurred at 127 Humane Lane between Sunday, January 29, 2012 and Monday, January 30, 2012.
A similar theft occurred between Sunday, February 5, 2012 and Monday, February 06, 2012.
A total of 16 pit bulls were stolen, including a pregnant one. But the shelter reported one dog was recovered Friday by a good Samaritan and is reportedly in good condition.
Columbia police continue to determine specifically why the dogs are being targeted. Investigators have been working with the animal shelter to hopefully capture the person or people responsible.
Investigators are trying to determine if the same person is responsible for all three thefts and if the suspect is working with an accomplice or accomplices.
