CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The former girlfriend of a man who escaped from the Berkeley County Jail last month said Friday, she's not surprised James Sanders was able to con a woman into giving him a ride to MUSC after the escape.

"He could talk a squirrel into giving you his hair, he's insane, he's just insane," said Jennifer, who asked that we only use her first name.

Sanders, 39, was mistakenly prepped for release from the jail January 26, when he wiggled out of a handcuff and walked out the back door of the jail.

Authorities say he then hitched a ride to MUSC, giving the driver a phony name and saying his wife was in labor at the hospital.

Surveillance cameras at the hospital showed Sanders walking around the waiting room, and blending in.

The U.S. Marshal's Service is leading the hunt for Sanders. The man in charge of the Charleston task force said Sanders doesn't like police and tried to outrun officers the last time he was arrested.

"Stop sticks had to be used, a taser had to be deployed, so he is someone we do consider to be a dangerous person," said Deputy Marshal Frank Conroy.

Conroy is confident Sanders will be caught soon.

"Being on the run is very difficult," he said. "You got to give up a lot of things, you got to give up family, you got to give up people you love. You got to give up your friends and you really got to go underground and people can only do that for so long."
