GEORGETOWN, SC (WCSC) - Authorities in Georgetown are investigating a child abuse case in which a mother allegedly assaulted her son with a curling iron, extension cords, and coat hangers.
Deputies with the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office responded to Georgetown Middle School last Thursday after receiving reports of child abuse. Upon arrival, the 13-year-old victim told deputies that on August 31, his mother abused him with a curling iron.
The victim said that after he told his mother he had gotten in trouble at school, she "began fussing at him" before he took him into her bedroom and pressed a hot curling iron to his face. The teen said that when he fell to the ground from the pain, his mother got on top of him and continued to press the iron onto his face.
He also said that his sister came into the room and told his mother to stop, to which she replied, "I know what I'm doing." After the incident, the student first used a wet rag on his face before standing in front of an AC unit to ease the burns on his face.
The victim said the next day before school, his mother told him to tell people he burned himself from grease while frying fish.
The incident report states that officers observed a large scabbed area approximately 3 inches in length extending from the bridge of the nose across the right side of his face.
The student said it was the first time his mother had ever used a curling iron, but that he gets "beat" regularly, saying that his mother had used extension cords, coat hangers, and other items. Most recently, the student said he was beaten in the head and arms with a coat hanger.
The report also states that the mother's ex-boyfriend came to the school to explain the truth about what was going on at the home. Investigating DSS officials said that the victim's mother told them he burned himself trying to move a pan of grease from the stove.
DSS and the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office are still investigating this case.
