NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A North Charleston postal carrier found a loaded handgun in the street near a school bus stop Thursday and safely removed it from harms way.
The U.S. Postal Service says that carrier Wayne Conner Finds retrieved the loaded .45 caliber handgun around 2:30 p.m. Thursday and called 911. He waited until police arrived to take the weapon.
Conner, who works at the North Charleston Post Office, was in his vehicle on Nevonna Street when he spotted what he first thought was a toy gun in the street. When he picked up the gun, he found it was cocked and loaded near a school bus stop.
"I'm glad it caught my eye," Conner said, "we could've had a tragedy."
Conner will receive a letter of commendation from Postmaster Pat Donohoe for action above and beyond the call of duty to his customers. Annually, over 200 postal employees are recognized for heroic assistance to others in a time of need.
