MONCKS CORNER, SC (WCSC) - Police said Friday a St. Stephen minister is one of as many as eight people arrested for shoplifting in the last week. Investigators said Darrell Jerome Gathers, 52, was caught on surveillance cameras stealing a sound mixer from the Money Man Pawn Shop on Highway 52. The mixer was recovered at Gathers' church, according to authorities. Officers also arrested Stephen Kuffel and Alexander Washington in unrelated cases. Police said Kuffel was caught on surveillance cameras as the Moncks Corner Walmart stealing generators. The cameras show Kuffel being arrested as soon as he left the store with the merchandise. Detectives said Washington was caught on the same store's surveillance cameras stealing a flat screen television from a display. Washington also was caught on cameras stealing a hunting bow from another store, according to authorities. "The people we're dealing a lot with, they're not the people going in and stealing a loaf of bread and a jar of peanut butter to feed their families," said Moncks Corner Police Lt. Michael Roach. "They're going in there, ripping off high dollar electronics to try to sell them on the street." Roach said Gathers and Washington both have long criminal records.
