SANTEE, SC - An Orangeburg teen was shot at a Santee night club early Sunday morning in what witnesses describe as a "hail of gunfire."
The 17-year-old male suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was transported to the Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for what was believed to be a non-life threatening wound.
Once at the hospital, the man went into surgery. His condition was unknown as of late Monday afternoon.
No arrests had been made.
The youth said he walking to his vehicle at Coogi's Lounge on Antioch Road at around 2 a.m. when gunfire erupted nearby. He said he was struck and fell to the ground. He was able to get to his truck and drive himself to the hospital, the incident report said.
The victim told investigators he wasn't involved in any dispute and had no idea who was shooting near the club.
As officers converged on the area, a deputy noticed an abandoned vehicle on Antioch Road just down from the night club. Several windows in the vehicle were shattered "and there was what appeared to be a bullet hole on the driver-side rear fender," the incident report.
Inside the vehicle, investigators found blood on the steering wheel and the driver's-side door.
The few people who were still in the night club parking lot told deputies the shots were fired from the road.
Deputies found spent .40-caliber shell casings in multiple locations, along with three "projectiles," the report said.
An Orangeburg man, who said he was in the car, told deputies he wasn't sure what happened. He said he was at the club when he heard gunfire coming from at least four gunmen and he ran off.
At that point, an acquaintance picked him up, and the two tried to flee. However, another vehicle passed and the occupants "started shooting out the window at him, so he bailed out and left the vehicle beside the road," the report said. The blood inside the car was from his friend, who was injured by flying glass, the man said.
A pool ball was also found inside the car. The man said he figured someone also threw the pool ball at the two men.
Anyone with any information about the gunmen is asked to call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. A reward is available for information leading to an arrest.
