SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - The US Marshals Office says they have arrested a 22-year-old man wanted in Berkeley County for assault and battery charges.

Authorities captured Michael Smith in Summerville. Smith is wanted for assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, carrying a pistol and threatening the life of a public official.

Smith was caught off of Highway 78 near Diana Court. After an intense investigation and manhunt in Berkeley County, information was developed that Smith was seen in Summerville.

Investigators say they discovered Smith's car in a neighborhood with several townhomes, and ultimately found Smith within one of the residences.

"This case is a great example of police working together to find their suspect. Even though we all may wear different badges and different uniforms, Operation Intercept is one unit with one goal: taking the worst of the worst off the streets. Our partnership with the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office is of paramount importance, and I thank them for this joint venture." stated Kelvin Washington, the U.S. Marshal for South Carolina.

Smith is charged out of Berkeley County with nine warrants, including charges of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, two counts of unlawfully carrying a pistol, narcotics possession and threatening the Life of a public official.
