NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - North Charleston police officers arrested a man for possession and intent to distribute drugs after an incident over the weekend.
Officers responded to a Primrose Avenue home on Saturday evening in reference to six or seven men loitering outside of a neighbor's house.
One police officer smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the back of the house. The officer called for back-up assistance to help finish identifying the subjects. A search of the men returned negative results.
Laying next to one man, 25-year-old Darnell Ashley Lennen, was a small scale. According to a police report, the suspect was eager to leave when officers began questioning him. He said he had to go to work.
When asked, Lennen told police that none of the cars out front were his, but officers found car keys in his pocket. He then police that the car was his aunt's car and that he had been driving it to work.
During a search of the vehicle, police noticed a bag filled with marijuana, a police report states. Officers found 58.1 grams of marijuana and 19.8 grams of crack cocaine. The suspect also had $557 in his possession, according to police.
The owner of the vehicle arrived on scene and confirmed that she had allowed the suspect to drive her car to work. After the vehicle was searched, the car was let go into her custody.
The suspect was arrested for possession with the intent to distribute marijuana, trafficking cocaine base and possession with intent to distribute within a half-mile proximity of a school.
The other men were put under a trespassing notice and were told to leave the scene.
