NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Police say a gunfight erupted following an assault at a convenience store in North Charleston Thursday afternoon. Witnesses told police that people in two cars exchanged gunfire at the Mo Mart parking lot on 5405 Dorchester Road.
According to the North Charleston Police Department, a cream colored Lincoln pulled into the store's parking lot and a man, the victim, got out and went into the store.
At that time a silver Charger pulled into the parking lot and a man from that vehicle walked up to the victim and began to argue. The suspect then went back to his Charger, took out a handgun and began striking the victim in the head with the gun.
A police report states that another person in the Lincoln took out a handgun and confronted the suspect who was pistol whipping the victim. Police say the suspect then got back into the Charger and began to back out of the parking lot.
According to investigators, as the Charger sped away, people inside the car began to shoot. Another vehicle in the parking lot was struck by a bullet which shattered the back window.
The North Charleston Police Department says there were no reported injuries from the gunfire, but the victim who was pistol whipped was taken to St. Francis Hospital for treatment.
At least 10 shell casings were recovered at the scene.
Officials at the nearby WB Goodwin Elementary School said that WB Goodwin is holding summer programs right now, and that students were present on campus on Thursday. However, they were let out by noon.
