NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - North Charleston police are still piecing together a shooting that left one man dead and resulted in a car crash that closed Interstate 26 for several hours Monday morning.

The highway was shut down near the Ashley Phosphate exit as North Charleston Police investigated the deadly car accident and shooting.

The driver of the vehicle, 40-year-old Maurice Youngblood of Charleston, was shot and killed around 3:30 a.m. as he entered I-26.

North Charleston police say the victim was at Waffle House with a woman before the shooting.

The Charleston County Coroner's Office says Youngblood died from a gunshot wound and not from the car accident. The coroner's office is conducting an autopsy.

Youngblood is no stranger to crime. He has a rap sheet going back more than 20 years to 1990.

He has been arrested and charged with driving with a suspended license seven times. He also has several drug arrests including possession and intent to distribute crack and possession of marijuana. He was charged with assault and battery twice and also was also arrested for armed robbery.

No arrests have been reported.

Commuters battled traffic jams all morning long as eastbound lanes on I-26 were shut down. Police directed drivers to alternate routes for several hours.

If you, or someone you know, have any information regarding any crime, you are encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers. You could earn a reward up to $1,000.
