NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - In the past 28 days, there have been nine burglaries, three car break-ins and one stabbing in the Saddlebrook community off of Dorchester Road. To combat the crime, North Charleston Police are handing out light bulbs.
"Any type of prevention or deterrent helps," says North Charleston Police Captain Scott Deckard. "In certain communities we've been in we certainly see a difference."
The force started the C.L.U.E initiative, Communities Light Up with Energy, a year ago and have passed out 2,000 light bulbs since in an effort to reduce crime.
But with the amount of crimes Saddlebrook has seen recently, neighbors say they don't feel comfortable leaving their homes.
"I'm afraid of someone maybe invading my home when I'm asleep," says Lawrence Green.
Green has lived in the community for more than 15 years. He says he's seen the good and the bad, but never this bad.
Over a two day period the North Charleston police force handed out close to 380 light bulbs in the Saddlebrook community. Cpt. Deckard says the next step is to show more presence in the area and hopefully bring the crime rate back down quickly.
