SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) – The Dorchester Habitat for Humanity ReStore was robbed of their equipment early Sunday morning.
According to the coordinator the store's safe and all its contents were stolen.
Money from the Habitat ReStore is a major source of income that allows Dorchester Habitat to continue to build decent, affordable homes for low income families in Dorchester County.
"Of all the places, why would somebody target Habitat for humanity?" asked manager Emily Grooms. "We're here to help people why take from us?"
Dorchester Habitat is schedule to start building a new home in the Corey Woods subdivision in Summerville this week.
"There's such a great need for housing, especially here in Dorchester County," said executive director Jay Elliott. "It's heartbreaking to think that someone would do this to us."
Elliott says the robbery will set the group back financially, but they will go ahead with Thursday's build.
He also says they will continue to lay foundations for future homes.
Dorchester Habitat needs the public's assistance in recovering the safe and its contents.
