FOLLY BEACH, SC - Authorities are investigating an early morning burglary at the Rock and Roll Roadhouse Cafe in which thieves cut through the raised floor of the bar and let the safe drop through. It fell about 10 feet to the ground.
Dolly wheel marks in the sand show the safe, weighing some 400 pounds, was carted away on a vehicle.
The thieves are believed to have used electric drills and saws to cut through about two inches of flooring, creating a hole measuring four feet by two feet under the safe in the kitchen area.
The daring crime also required a good bit of balance since to reach the floor, the criminals had to climb up about 10 feet off the ground; there was no sign of scaffolding being used.
A city police officer said there are no suspects at this time.
The bar is on West Ashley Avenue. Lattice work under the bar blocked any view of the thieves from the roadway.
The haul is considered significant because the safe held receipts from the 4th of July holiday weekend.
